2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey
The 2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), led by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in collaboration with the UNHCR, the World Bank, the Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement, the Ministry of Health (MOH), UNFPA, and UNICEF, marks the seventh iteration of the survey in Uganda.
The main objective of the UDHS 2022 was to obtain relevant data on the demographic characteristics, family planning, maternal mortality and infant and child mortality among the Ugandan population. Another objective was to collect information on health care services and activities, antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, children’s immunizations, and management of childhood diseases.
For the first time since the establishment of the UDHS survey series, the sample was expanded to representatively cover the refugee settlements, which had previously been excluded by design. The findings from the refugee settlements are presented in chapter 20, which offers an in-depth look at the challenges faced by refugees in Uganda.
Key recommendations from the 2022 UDHS include improving access to quality education and healthcare, increasing family planning outreach, and enhancing water and sanitation facilities, particularly in refugee settlements. These measures aim to contribute to the sustainable socio-economic integration of refugees and improve overall health outcomes.
The findings from the 2022 UDHS are important for informing policy and program development aimed at both host populations and refugees, supporting Uganda’s broader development goals and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
